Change Management Skills

Strategically applying/utilizing the various disciplines in order to cause organizational change and add value is often referred to as “change management.” Managers and aspiring leaders in the workplace are increasingly being asked to develop the personal skills and attitudes for implementing change as well as a technical understanding of how to apply the tools for change.  Learn how to successfully plan, implement, communicate, create employee involvement and commitment, and add value during change.
 
Change in the Workplace
 
Most people do not like change even when they know that change is inevitable and will happen with or without your consent. A recent Gallup study found that nearly 70% of the American workforce is disengaged from their jobs. They perceive changes in careers to be too difficult to accomplish or they are too old, not skilled enough and may lack the funds to change their skill set. The good news is that those who are willing to embrace change are much more likely to thrive under new conditions. Take home strategies on how to deal with changes in your work environment and even how to introduce changes to your workplace culture.
 
Creating Community & Social Change
 
From elected officials to the CEO of Apple, leaders are now urging people in the workplace and community to participate in community and social change to help improve communities and society.  Discover how social change happens, and doesn’t, and how you can influence change. Then explore working within an established organization versus creating your own group for change. GearsHow the Course Works

It is easy to participate in your online course. After you register, you will be given a web address to go to get into your online classroom.  You will have a password and use your email address and password to gain access. Once inside the online classroom, here’s what you can expect.
 
CalendarParticipate when you want

You can participate any time of day or evening. The online classroom is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are no live real-time requirements or meetings. You decide when you participate. For the best learning, participants should log into the course on 2-3 different days of the week.
 
ChecklistWhat you will do

For each Unit, you will:
  • Read the print readings 
  • Have the option of accessing the online readings
  • Listen to the audio presentation for the Unit and view the slides
  • Have the option of taking a self-quiz to see how much you have learned
  • Engage in written online discussion with your instructor and other participants
For best learning, you should make one or more comments at 2-3 different times each week.
The content (readings, audio lectures, slides) and self quizzes are accessible for the entire course, so you can work ahead, or go back and review again, at your convenience.

DiscussionDiscussion

The Discussion for each Unit lasts one week. All comments are made in writing and can be made at any time of the day or night. Your instructor will log into the Discussion area at least three times per week and answer questions, make comments, and respond to comments by you and the other participants.
We encourage you to make 2-3 comments each week to maximize your learning and enjoyment of the course.

About Your Instructors

Dr. Lisa M. S. Barrow is an international workplace bullying expert.  She is the author of two books titled “In Darkness Light Dawns: Exposing Workplace Bullying”, and “Hope For A Healthy Workplace”.  She is known to some as “The Rosa Parks of the workplace”.  Dr. Barrow spends countless hours assisting bullied employees regain their strength, hope and lives as a result of their bullying experiences.  She also assists organizations in creating a bully-free environment by providing training and guidance.  Dr. Barrow is passionate about creating healthier workplaces for all employees by focusing on the overall well-being of employees.
Dr. Barrow’s research reveals that workplace bullying is an ignored epidemic that is wreaking havoc in organizations throughout Canada and the US.  She has been an advocate for anti-bullying in the workplace legislation in Ontario and New York State.  She believes that anti-bullying legislation is the next logical step in protecting the human rights of Americans and Canadians.  Her research sheds light on the impact bullying has on targeted employees, coworkers, organizations and society.
Dr. Barrow has appeared on media outlets in Canada and the United States. She has written articles on workplace bullying for academic journals, newspapers and magazines. Dr. Barrow received the 2013 Northeast Marketplace Ministry Award for her workplace bullying awareness efforts. Her book “In Darkness Light Dawns: Exposing Workplace Bullying” was shortlisted for the 2010 Word Guild Award.

With over 15 years’ experience in training, coaching and organizational consulting, Sally Schmall, MSW, SPHR is a national presenter on applying Lean Six Sigma and Change Management Strategies to HR in a variety of industries. She has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan since 2000 and is President of Academy Coaching, specializing in career coaching and customized training. She is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
Brenton Rolle is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional with a Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership from Palm Beach Atlantic University. Brenton has over 18 years of supervisory experience in the field of Recreation and Parks, volunteer coaching and mentoring.
